# VS Code

VS Code (with GitHub Copilot agent mode) supports remote HTTP MCP servers in `mcp.json`. The installer does not configure VS Code yet, so set it up by hand.

## Manual

Create `.vscode/mcp.json` in your workspace, or run **MCP: Open User Configuration** from the Command Palette to add it for every workspace:

```json
{
  "inputs": [
    { "type": "promptString", "id": "justclaw-it-key",
      "description": "JustClaw-It API key", "password": true }
  ],
  "servers": {
    "justclaw-it": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://justclaw.it.com/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ${input:justclaw-it-key}" }
    }
  }
}
```

The `inputs` entry makes VS Code ask for your key the first time the server starts and store it securely, so the key is never written to the file. That makes the workspace file safe to commit.

You can also run **MCP: Add Server** from the Command Palette, choose **HTTP**, and enter `https://justclaw.it.com/mcp`; then add the `headers` entry above to the server it creates.

## Check it

Open the Chat view in agent mode and select the tools button: the `justclaw-it` tools should be listed. If the server shows an error, use **MCP: List Servers**, select `justclaw-it`, and show its output.

> VS Code doesn't forward servers that need interactive inputs (like `${input:...}`) to its separate Copilot agent host. If you use that harness, follow VS Code's guide to replacing input prompts with environment variables.

## Try it

> Use JustClaw-It to search for a Python FastAPI JWT dependency, permissive licence.
